Halloween Costume Ideas for Seniors

Are you attending a Halloween party this season? If the invitation calls for costumes, don’t be a party pooper. You’re never too old to be a bit silly, and we’ve compiled a helpful list of Halloween costume ideas for seniors. These costumes are inexpensive and easy to make or buy – perfect for a last-minute party or procrastinating partygoer.

Halloween Costume Ideas for Seniors

Mime

Do you have a black-and-white-striped shirt? What about black pants? Are you an expressive person, who doesn’t necessarily need speech to communicate? A mime costume might be perfect for you. In addition to the striped shirt and black pants, you’ll need black suspenders, white gloves, and a black beret. Use white face paint to make your face a blank canvas and then emphasize your eyes and eyebrows with black makeup and your lips with red lipstick. Finally, remember to practice that invisible box routine!

Mary Poppins

Who wouldn’t like to be Mary Poppins for a day? For this costume you’ll need a white collared shirt, black A-line skirt, black derby hat (add a couple fake daisies and berries for accuracy), white gloves, a black umbrella, a red bowtie, and a carpet bag. If you want to go all-out, try sprinkling some Mary Poppins vocabulary into your speech during the party: A spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down. Practically perfect in every way. Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!

Pirate

Ahoy, matey! If you want to be a pirate this All Hallows’ Eve, you’ll need a few basic items, which can be mixed and matched: a loose white blouse, black pants, an open vest, a red sash, an eye patch, and a fake sword. Bonus points if you can score a pirate hat and a hook hand.

Bob Ross

Dressing up as one of America’s most beloved artists isn’t just easy; it’s also sure to bring a smile to your friends’ faces. The key elements are a chambray or button-down woven shirt, jeans, an artist’s palette, and (of course)  a curly brown fro wig. If you want to take your costume to the next level, follow one of Ross’s tutorials to create a painting of some “happy trees.”

Tourist

Who hasn’t donned the cliché “tourist costume” at some point in their life? You’re aiming to look eager, prepared, and ready for a day of adventure. Some key elements of the look: a sun hat, sunscreen (two white stripes across your cheeks), a fanny pack, sunglasses, a big camera hung around your neck, and a tropical shirt (or a souvenir t-shirt). As an added bonus, since you’ll have a camera handy all night, you’ll be able to take lots of pictures of your friends’ wonderful costumes.

Waldo

Where’s Waldo? If you dress up as Waldo this Halloween, you can decide! You’ll just need a red-and-white-striped shirt, a red-and-white knit hat topped with a red pom-pom, round black glasses, blue jeans, and a brown cane. Have fun hiding in the background of your friends’ photos!

Wizard

If you have a long white beard, you’re nearly a wizard already! If not, you’ll need to purchase a long white beard to go along with your long, drapey robe and wizard’s hat. Depending on the type of wizard you’d like to be, you might also want a wand, a staff, or a cauldron.

Cruella de Vil

If she doesn’t scare you, no evil thing will! Of all our Halloween costume ideas for seniors, Cruella de Vil is probably the best for fashionistas. The key is to stick with all black and white clothing, looking for pieces that are chic, sophisticated, and fashion-forward. Your hair should be a bold contrast of black and white as well (you could temporarily dye half your hair or buy a wig). To accessorize, find some elbow-length red gloves as well as a long cigarette holder.

Witch

Perhaps the easiest Halloween costume of all! To be a witch, you simply need a pointy black hat, some black clothes, and a wooden broom. Easy peasy! You could go for a more elaborate interpretation, with warts, a cape, a cauldron, and a black cat at your side, but it’s certainly not crucial to the costume.
