Senior Activities in Greenville

Visit a Public Garden

Thanks to its location in the foothills of the Piedmont, Greenville is home to endless natural beauty. Native and adapted plants, trees, and wildflowers thrive in our temperate climate, and our city’s public gardens capitalize on this abundant beauty to provide scenic and relaxing retreats. These are great places to enjoy an afternoon stroll, meet for a picnic lunch, cozy up with your favorite book, or simply enjoy the beauty of nature. Gardens are open free of charge from dawn until dusk, and benches and picnic areas provide plenty of seating. As a result, gardens are one of the many popular senior activities in Greenville. Find your nearest public garden and start planning an afternoon surrounded by beauty.

Visit the Greenville County Museum of Art

Not only is the Greenville County Museum of Art home to the largest collection of watercolors by American artist Andrew Wyeth, but the museum is also considered the premier American art museum here in the South. If the outdoors isn’t calling your name, a visit to the museum never disappoints. Admission is free, and the museum hosts weekly events from tours and live music to artist demonstrations. To learn more about a particular artist or dive deeper into the museum’s history, attend one of the Third Thursday tours. These monthly events give visitors a chance to wander through museum exhibits alongside a museum docent.

Stroll Through the Park

For a scenic walk that won’t wear you out, explore one of Greenville’s many parks. Walking paths of all lengths stretch throughout the city, and they serve as one of the most advantageous senior activities in Greenville. Whether the walking path is paved or mulched, it provides an excellent form of exercise. Each park boasts different amenities, so be sure to check out each park to see which one captures your attention. For example, McPherson Park features a paved walking loop plus shuffleboard, tennis courts, and a miniature golf course. Cleveland Park is home to the Fernwood Nature Trail, which meanders through a hardwood portion of the park and is ideal for birdwatchers.

Join a Pickleball Team

Don’t laugh this idea off too quickly. Pickleball is one of the fastest growing sports in America, and it’s great for all ages. The game combines aspects of ping-pong, badminton, and tennis. It’s easy to learn and is one of the many popular senior activities in Greenville. Greenville County Rec provides the courts, and the Upstate Pickleball league arranges tournaments.

Compete in the Greenville County Senior Games

The Greenville County Rec puts together numerous senior activities in Greenville each year. They host Valentine’s Day parties, retreats, and fun runs. Plus, each spring, the Greenville County Rec hosts the Senior Games. This annual athletic event is a great chance to join in some friendly competition or cheer on your friends. Games include bowling, corn hole, track and field, disc golf, table tennis, shuffleboard, badminton, horseshoes, and mini golf. A $12 registration fee provides entry to all events.

Join a Water Aerobics Class

For anyone looking for a low-impact exercise, the Greenville County Aquatic Complex offers a range of water aerobics classes. The arthritis class is a great option for those suffering from arthritis or who are recovering from injury or surgery. Classes provide light cardio with a focus on stretching, but if you’re more advanced, you can venture into the deep water aerobics class for a vigorous but non-impact workout.
