Spring Cleaning Checklist for Seniors in Assisted Living

Everyone looks forward to spring, but not everyone looks forward to spring cleaning. It may not be the most fun springtime activity, but keeping your living space organized and tidy is a great way to avoid injuries and make your life easier. So, what should you be focused on for your spring cleaning checklist?

General Spring Cleaning Tips

Before jumping into your spring cleaning, it’s a good idea to slow down and make a plan. Getting organized can keep you from getting overwhelmed and make sure your cleaning process is as successful as possible:

  • Create a list of the rooms or areas you plan to tackle in your living space. Clean one area at a time, and don’t try to multitask.
  • Pace your work in a way that makes sense for you. Spring cleaning doesn’t have to occur all in one day, and you’ll do a better job if you take your time.
  • Take note of tasks requiring additional assistance, such as rearranging heavy boxes. Be sure to ask for help to avoid injury.
  • Remember that housekeeping is a part of the support you receive in your assisted living community. Don’t assume you have to do everything and check in with staff to see what assistance they can offer.

What Should Be on My Spring Cleaning Checklist?

Since seniors in assisted living receive regular housekeeping help, your focus for spring cleaning might be different than it used to be. However, you can still do plenty to reset your space for spring! Use the checklist below to get started, and be sure to add other items that are specific to your living space.

Bedroom and Living Areas

  • Sort through disorganized drawers and other storage spaces, and be ready to toss things you don’t need. Aim for lots of clear floor space, and make sure what you keep is well-organized and stored appropriately.
  • Spring is a great time to refresh your home and office supplies. As you clean, take note of items you need to refurbish.
  • Make sure lap blankets and other comfort items are laundered. Pillows and other plush items that can’t be laundered can be refreshed with baking soda.

Kitchenette

  • Sort through food and condiments. Throw away anything that is expired or otherwise inedible.
  • Clean out and reorganize storage areas. Remove everything from cabinets and cupboards, and clean as appropriate before replacing items.
  • Restock kitchen cleaning supplies, such as dish soap.

Bathroom

  • Clean out the medicine cabinet. Ask staff to help you safely dispose of expired or unneeded medication through a drug take-back program or pharmacy.
  • Sort through cosmetics and other bathroom products. Toss anything that is expired or unusable.

Miscellaneous

  • If it’s been over a year since you’ve sorted through your wardrobe, take this opportunity to do so. Shoes and clothing that no longer fit but are in good shape can be donated to people who need them.
  • Don’t forget to clean up your digital spaces too! Cell phones, computers, and other items must be regularly maintained to work well. If you aren’t sure where to start, try this guide.
  • Spring cleaning is a great time to inventory the safety equipment in your living space. Is it still in good working order? Would additional items help, such as anti-slip strips for the bathtub?
